Fuerteventura

“An oasis in the middle of civilisation’s desert” Miguel Unamuno

Fuerteventura - the tranquil island as it is often referred to, is some 100km from the coast of Africa and as a result it has more in common with its neighbour than the other six Canary Islands, namely Fuerteventura’s warm climate and arid landscape.

In past times its geography and climate have proved detrimental, with no production industry to speak of, but now, due to 2,800 hours of sunshine and sandy beaches, Fuerteventura has a booming tourism industry.

Despite the increase in tourist numbers you can still find isolated empty Fuerteventura beaches, lapped by the Atlantic waters, having 152 to choose from. Our team at Solymar Holidays can advise you on the best locations on the island to stay and while away those sunshine hours!

Puerto Del Rosario

Fuerteventura’s capital city can easily be visited in a day, there is a museum dedicated to Miguel Unamuno, the Spanish writer, situated in Calle Rosario. The port and sea front of Fuerteventura’s capital are currently being refurbished as part of an ambitious plan to improve the area in the interest of attracting more tourists to the area, as well as improving the environment in the area of the new Palacio de Formations y Congresos at Loz Pozos.

Creation of a quay 300m long will allow large cruise ships to use the Fuerteventura harbour. It is being created by placing eight floating sections, the first of which has been positioned, with the hope that all eight will be in place by the end of the year.

Sand has been imported to improve the Playa de Hornos, known locally as the ‘Playa de Pozos’. In addition a promenade will be built between the port and Playa Blanca, therefore Fuerteventura’s capital will definitely be worth a visit.

Located in El Matorral, just five kilometres from the island capital of Puerto Del Rosario, Fuerteventura Airport plays a key role in tourism development on the island. In September 2006 Fuerteventura played host to 394,492 visitors, not bad for an island that’s only 1,658 sq km in size.
